How to apply for SASSA SRD Grant



The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is managed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), and it was implemented at the peak of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The South African government introduced this grant with an amount of R350 for each qualifying beneficiary for several years. This grant had no increase, and fortunately, in 2024, the South African government decided to add an R20 increase to the grant, making it R370.

How to Qualify for the SASSA SRD Grant

In order to qualify for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, you must meet the following requirements
  • Must have Valid Identity Documents (SA ID or Passport)
  • Must be 18 years and not older than 60 years
  • Must be unemployed, getting no financial support from the S.A. government like the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) or SASSA Social Grants
  • Have a valid cellphone number 
  • Must not have more than R624 in your bank account

How To Apply for the SASSA SRD Grant

To apply for the SASSA SRD grant, you can visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za/. If you meet the eligibility criteria mentioned above, you will need to provide your personal, financial, and banking details during the application process. You can choose to receive your money through your bank card, cash send, or at a retail store such as Boxer, Shoprite, or Pick n Pay.
