SASSA Child Support Grants Left Unchanged in October 2025: Families Disappointed

Although many SASSA social grants received a R10 increase this October, child support grant recipients are notably excluded, causing frustration among millions of families relying on this lifeline. The child support grant, currently at R530 each child, remains unchanged despite the general adjustment linked to inflation, leaving caregivers to struggle with rising costs for essentials like school supplies and nutrition.
The decision stems from Treasury guidelines, which prioritise adjustments for adult and disability grants while holding child-related payments steady until the next fiscal review in April 2026.
The SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) officials explain that child grants were last increased in April 2025 by R20, but no mid-year boost was budgeted this time. This has drawn ire from child rights organisations, who argue that with child poverty rates exceeding 60% in South Africa, any delay exacerbates inequality.
Payments for child grants kicked off on October 4th, 2025, following the standard calendar to prevent overcrowding at collection points. For those eligible for the new R530 Care Taker Grant supplement, aimed at caregivers of disabled children, payments align with disability grant dates, such as October 3rd. However, the lack of an across-the-board increase means many single-parent households feel shortchanged.
Advocates are pushing for reforms, including linking all grants to real-time CPI adjustments. In the meantime, SASSA advises using the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant as a temporary supplement for qualifying families, with applications open until March 2026. This disparity highlights broader debates on social welfare priorities in a post-pandemic economy.
