SASSA News Update (26th March 2025)
SASSA News Update - South Africa’s Social Grants Get a Boost: Early Payments and Increased Amounts Roll Out in April 2025
Millions of South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens will receive their SASSA social grants earlier than usual this April, alongside the first payment increases of 2025.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) announced the adjusted schedule to avoid delays caused by a weekend overlap, ensuring beneficiaries can access funds ahead of the month’s critical expenses.
Why the Early Payout?
Typically paid between the 3rd and 5th of each month, SASSA grants will land in accounts earlier due to the 5th falling on a Saturday. Spokesperson Andile Tshona confirmed the revised dates:
- Older Persons Grant: Wednesday, 2 April
- Disability Grant: Thursday, 3 April
- Children’s Grants: Friday, 4 April
- SRD R370 Grant: Dates pending confirmation
This shift aims to prevent disruptions for beneficiaries reliant on timely payments for essentials like food, utilities, and school costs.
Grant Increases: A Lifeline Adjusted for Inflation
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s 2025 Budget allocated R284.7 billion to social grants, funding the first increases of the year:
- Old Age (60–74) & Disability Grants : ↑ R130 to R2,315/month
- Old Age (75+) : ↑ R135 to R2,335/month
- War Veterans & Care Dependency Grants : ↑ R130 to R2,315/month
- Child Support Grant : ↑ R30 to R560/month
- Foster Care Grant : ↑ R70 to R1,250/month
“These adjustments reflect the government’s commitment to cushioning vulnerable households against rising living costs,” said Tshona.
Postbank Card Migration: What You Need to Know
Since September 2024, Postbank has replaced 1.4 million outdated SASSA gold cards with new black cards. While gold cards expired on 20 March 2025, Postbank assures beneficiaries without black cards:
Cash access: Collect grants at Post Office branches or via till point withdrawals at retailers (Shoprite, Usave, Boxer, SPAR, Pick n Pay, Checkers) until June 2025.
Foreign Nationals: Ineligible for black cards but can use existing documentation at post offices.
Black Card holders: withdraw at ATMs or retailers; post offices no longer assist.
“No one will be left unpaid,” emphasized Postbank’s Bongani Dikeo. Migrations continue until the end of June 2025.
Key Deadlines and Contacts
Migration deadline: 30 June 2025 – Swap gold cards for black ones at Postbank branches.

A Call to Action for Beneficiaries
SASSA urges recipients to adhere to the new payment schedule and complete card migrations promptly. “Delays risk leaving thousands stranded,” warned Tshona. For retirees like 668-year-old Thandiwe Mbeki from Soweto, the changes are a relief: “Every rand counts. This increase means I can finally buy my grandson school shoes.”
As South Africa battles economic headwinds, these grants remain a critical safety net for over 18 million citizens. With early payments and modest hikes, April brings a glimmer of stability to those who need it most.
