SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) KZN Technological Revolution to Make Huge Impacts
As South Africa embraces a digitalised future, the South African Social Security Agency's (SASSA) KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) branch is making strides with its use of biometrics and online systems. These improvements have enabled income verification for 77% of over 100,000 cases, helping ensure that grants effectively reach those in need while reducing fraud.
The new initiative brings facial recognition to grant applications and payments, which means beneficiaries won't have to endure long lines or frequent visits anymore. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, called this a "game-changer," emphasising how it not only streamlines the process but also helps protect public funds. This is a big step toward a more secure and efficient system that puts people first.
How many SASSA grants were mislocated
Latest data has shown a decline in fraudulent claims, with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) recovering millions from misallocated grants. Older persons won’t need to reapply for grants until the end of 2025, relieving mobility-challenged seniors.
Nationally, this aligns with SASSA's broader push for modernisation, including the SRD grant's online portal for status checks. However, challenges remain – rural areas with poor internet access report delays, and elderly recipients have highlighted issues during parliamentary hearings.
Where to get the SASSA Application
As October payments flow in, KZN's model could inspire other provinces. SASSA grant recipients are urged to embrace these tools: they must simply download the SASSA app for balance checks and updates. Could this be the start of a fraud-free welfare system? South Africans are watching closely.
